RECORD HARVEST IS JUST THE START

RECORD HARVEST IS JUST THE START

After several years of investment added 400,000 trees to the landscape, Aston Manor Cider
has just completed a record harvest.
The 2017 harvest is a landmark as all new orchards have provided fruit for the first time. The
business anticipates yields from the recent planting scheme will continue to increase for a
number of years.
As the largest independent cider maker in the UK, this signals the start of a 25 year
commitment to farmers and growers across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
Based on yield projections of around 20 tonnes of apple from every acre every year, the
award-winning cider maker will pay in excess of £55m to farmers and growers for this
planting scheme alone.
Rod Clifford, head cider maker at Aston Manor Cider, said: “Despite the timings of this
harvest being a little unusual, we were well prepared.
“High winds from the other side of the Atlantic meant an early start and lots of fruit in the
first few weeks, but thanks to our growers, and our state-of-the art pressing mill at
Stourport-on-Severn, we were up to the challenge and harvested a record number of apples.
“The great news is not only the quality of the fruit received but how the harvest impacted
the trees themselves.
“I’ve never seen the orchards in such great condition. If winter is kind, spring should see a
spectacular show of blossom with the promise of a truly remarkable harvest next year as the
new trees continue to mature.”
Gordon Johncox, chief executive of Aston Manor Cider, said:
“It is wonderful to see our investments bear fruit this harvest. We embarked on this planting
scheme because of the confidence we had in our products, our growers and our future prospects.
“Though we won’t break even on each tree planted for eight or nine years, we are
committed to our growers and to the sustainability of the rural economy.
“As these new tress grow and increase the demands of the pressing facility in the coming
harvests, we look forward to producing even more award-winning cider.”
Cider industry welcomes Budget duty freeze and asks for new band details

Cider industry welcomes Budget duty freeze and asks for new band details

22nd November 2017 – Response to Autumn Budget

We are pleased that the Chancellor has listened to our concerns about the long-term decline in cider.  This freeze in excise duty announced in the Budget today is much needed, as it will work towards supporting the industry and our rural communities. However, we were disappointed that the Chancellor has been unable to respond to our call for a reduction of 2p per pint that we believed would have helped bring the industry back into growth in the longer term.

With the announcement of a new cider duty band, we look forward to working with government on the responses to the consultation.  Helen Thomas, Chair of the National Association of Cider Makers said “We will be looking at the details of this new duty band to ensure that it does not adversely impact the ongoing success of cider makers across the UK, whatever their size.”

Additional statement, 23.11.17:

“The announcement in the budget indicated that the Treasury intend to create a new duty band for cider falling just below the current threshold between the high and low duty bands that are already in place.  The announcement suggested a new band would be between 6.9% and 7.5% ABV and would impact only a small percentage of the cider market.

At this stage, we are working with our members and the regional associations that represent the smaller cider makers, to better understand the real impacts.  The Treasury have indicated that the introduction of the new band will be included in the 2018 finance bill and at this stage have offered no details regarding the level of duty that will be applied.  As such it is difficult to fully understand the impact to cider makers, and we therefore aim to work with the Treasury in the coming weeks to provide better clarity for all cider makers.”

Heineken calls for a Package for Pubs in the Budget

Heineken calls for a Package for Pubs in the Budget

The second Budget of 2017 will be announced on 22 November and we’re calling for a different outcome to the first 2017 budget, which saw the Chancellor increase duty on cider.

The cider, brewing and pubs sector supports hundreds of thousands of jobs and contributes tens of billions of pounds to the UK economy, which could be jeopardised by a further duty increase next month.

Instead, we’re pushing for a cider duty cut of 2p per pint and a beer duty cut of 1p per pint. With pubs facing significant cost pressures, this would help encourage investment, create jobs and keep more of these vital community hubs open.

Get involved! Visit www.heineken.co.uk/packageforpubs now to send a message to your local MP to encourage the Chancellor to cut cider and beer duty in the November Budget.

‘S’ Marks the Can!

‘S’ Marks the Can!

Can they do it? Yes they can! Sheppy’s is one of the oldest and most distinguished cider making families in the world – with a rich history that spans six generations and 200 years. Headed by Master of Cider David Sheppy, the traditional cider makers have launched a brand new format – 330ml cans. Available in two premium varieties; Classic Cider and new Cloudy Cider.

Sheppy’s new look cans are a nod to the cider makers’ 200 year history. Named after the actual vats they have been using for years to help mature their cider; VAT 14 and VAT 07. This is the next step for the craft cider makers and helps promote responsible drinking, with a single serve size and lower ABV. The launch also coincides with a new look for Sheppy’s – to cement their premium positioning and reinforce the authenticity of the brand.

Real cider, real knowledge – and real heritage. Today, David Sheppy heads up the traditional cider brand at the family farm near Taunton, in Somerset. His passion, knowledge and expertise are behind every drop of Sheppy’s cider.

Discussing the launch of the canned range, David Sheppy explains: “We are extremely excited about the launch of our cans. This is something we have wanted to do for a while and after our recent rebrand, we felt it was the perfect time. Cans are great as they offer a smaller serving size, are lighter than glass bottles, take up less shelf space – and leave less carbon footprint. Available in our classic cider and cloudy variant – VAT 14 and VAT 07 meet the demand for premium, great tasting, convenient cider.”
