Cider makers across the South West have responded to the continued absence of gatherings by launching a cyber celebration to mark South West Cider Week.
Such is the ingenuity and determination of producers around the region that a packed programme of events actually exceeds one week – stretching from Friday 12 June to Sunday 21 June.
During that time, cider drinkers and serious aficionados alike can enjoy online tastings, virtual tours, a cyber meet and greet with producers and even a drive through cider shop followed by an orchard walk.
The events are being organised by cider makers and retailers themselves, and co-ordinated through the website, www.swciderweek.org.uk and on social media using the hashtag #swciderweek.
As the oldest drink produced in the UK cider making in the South West is steeped in centuries of history. This is not by chance as it is the combination of the landscape, soil and weather that mean that apple orchards flourish in the region – especially those planted with the bittersweet fruit varieties that have made West Country ciders famous around the world. Though it is also a sector and a region noted for much of the innovation in terms of producing different styles of cider, orcharding practices and product manufacture.
The dozens of events that make up the South West Cider Week are being coordinated by the South West of England Cidermakers’ Association (SWECA).
Martin Berkeley of Pilton Cider is organising the SWECA involvement. He said: “Sharing a glass of cider in good company is a fabulous thing and vital to many of the social connections we make. It is also so important commercially for hundreds of businesses across our region.
“Whilst it might a while before we can gather in person, we were determined to see how we could still celebrate cider.
“The response, thanks to the imagination and resilience of cider makers has been fantastic and as a result, we will – virtually – invite the world to share our passion for the drink so synonymous with the South West.”
As well as showcasing the skills of cider makers and revealing the great matches with other regional produce like cheese, it is hoped that the series of events will also provide a much-needed boost to producers given lost sales through pubs and bars and the absence of tourism this summer.
The scale of the loss to producers is significant as a third of cider sales, representing two-thirds of the value, are through on-trade outlets. For 2019, that amounted to £2bn in sales (Westons Cider Report).
To amplify this effort many businesses are offering discounts for online sales and some specialist retailers are putting together mixed cases that reflect the great breath of quality drinks produced across the region.
Support for the South West Cider Week was immediately forthcoming from the body representing the UK cider industry – the biggest cider market in the world.
For the National Association of Cider Makers (NACM), Mark Hopper said: “We know that cider makers like nothing more than being able to share their craft with people – whether those consumers are new to cider or familiar with the many styles available.
“The continued absence of the chance to meet people in person is understood, though it has an impact.
“That producers right across the South West have come together to create ten days packed with different ways to enjoy cider is fantastic. We will do all we can to encourage people to join at least one of the events.”
The cider makers stepping up to the cyber challenge range from small producers new to the sector like Find & Foster and Ganley & Nash to established businesses of scale with hundreds of years of history like Sheppy’s and Thatchers Cider.
Details of the events are available at South West Cider Week and via the Twitter account, @swciderweek.
Market data from the Westons Cider Report, 2020:
- UK producers made around 783m litres of cider in 2019
- The value of sales in 2019 was worth £3.1bn
- On-trade outlets accounted for around a third of sales (38%) worth £2bn
- UK cider sales represent 37.5% of cider sales worldwide

This coming weekend should have been the Big Apple’s thirtieth year of running Blossomtime in Putley, but of course it won’t be happening. This annual opportunity to enjoy the orchards full of apple blossom and to taste many different local ciders, perries and apple juices has become an established part of the calendar in this corner of Herefordshire. This time of year sees the new product from last year’s harvest becoming ready to drink – and there’s no stopping it! Many craft makers depend on local events and tourism and hospitality businesses to sell their cider, perry and apple juice – and so they are taking a big hit from lockdown. This year’s blossom is the start of next year’s cider – but first there is a need to sell last year’s stock.
For the past thirty years, the Big Apple has been organising community events to support their local orchards and apple, cider and perry producers. Normally, Putley Parish Hall would be heaving with visitors buying cider, perry and apple juice next weekend. The nine producers who had arranged to be there are working hard to find extra ways to make their drinks available within the licensing laws – whether that is through online orders, local deliveries, click and collect, farm shops and village stores. The Big Apple is supporting them through a special information area on their website at https://www.bigapple.org.uk/blossomtime-2020/
Many regular Big Apple venues are to be found there, including Once Upon a Tree, Gregg’s Pit and Woodredding Farm, Pope’s Perry, Yew Tree Farm and Jus Apple Juice. And two special guests who each won awards at last year’s Big Apple Cider and Perry Trials: Bartestree Cider, last year’s Champion Perrymaker, and Halfpenny Green Cider, winner of the bottle fermented/conditioned cider.

The Garden Cider Company has opened the doors of its bottling plant to help support local breweries with a surplus of beer. With on-trade sales at zero, breweries have had to change tack and look to bottle beer that would have ordinarily supplied pubs, bars and restaurants.
With its limited shelf life, there have been concerns that thousands of litres beer will go to waste if not bottled quickly. Current waiting times in larger bottling plants are too long to offset the problem and breweries have been left with surplus product that they are unable to utilise to meet the increased off-trade demand.
Garden Cider is now in a position to help breweries needing to bottle their beer fast. The sustainable cider-making company opened its own bottling plant in 2018 to not only lower its own production costs but to offer a competitive, agile and flexible alternative to breweries in the area. It specialises in smaller quantities, of between 1000 and 10,000 litres, and offers just a two-week waiting time, compared to the standard eight weeks required by larger bottling plants.
Ben Filby, co-founder of Garden Cider, said: “We’re a family run business which allows us to be more flexible for our bottling customers. We also understand the industry from their side as cider makers who have used external bottling plants ourselves, and we really endeavour to make the process as simple and painless as possible.
“We’re currently taking bottling bookings two weeks in advance, but we will try and accommodate and prioritise breweries according to their needs. So just get in touch – we’re here to help!”
The Garden Cider Company was founded in 2010 by brothers, Will and Ben Filby, and is entirely sourced from local, donated garden apples. The company’s ethos is based in sustainability, taking an abundant largely wasted natural resource and turning it into an ethical, quality product with a unique provenance. Garden Cider receives donations from more than 4000 local households who in turn receive a percentage of their apples’ yield.

The Garden Cider Company was created in 2010 by Ben and Will Filby. The idea is simple, hand crafted premium ciders sourced entirely from local, donated garden apples.
Each year, over 4000 local households take their spare garden fruit to the Garden Cider Company and in return receive a share of the cider made back for free, taking an abundant, largely wasted natural resource and turning it into sustainable, ethical and quality products.
The flavours in The Garden Cider Range include: Original, Dry Hopped, Elderflower, Plum & Ginger, Wild Strawberry, Raspberry & Rhubarb, Blueberry and Berry & Cherry.
In 2019, The Garden Cider Company was shortlisted in the Sustainable Use of Raw Materials category of the 2019 Footprint Drinks Sustainability Awards.

Gabe Cook and The Worlds Biggest Cider Tasting
A UK-based, global cider expert has launched a plan to host the world’s biggest ever cider tasting session, online, next month. Gabe Cook, aka The Ciderologist, has decided to create the event, to be held on Saturday 2nd May, in response to the coronavirus pandemic and to help cider lovers combat the isolation the lockdown is causing.
Mr Cook plans to host the interactive cider tasting and talking session via his @ciderologist Instagram channel at 8pm UK time (GMT+1) and is inviting cider makers and drinkers from all over the globe to join him on the broadcast. Cider makers from as far afield as Australia, USA, Norway, Brazil, Japan, and New Zealand have already signed up and will be chatting live on screen. “Cider is an incredibly social drink with a great community all over the world” said Gabe. “Like many people, I’m trying to find ways to keep that connectivity alive in these tough times and thought it would be fun to try something that has never been done before.”
Mr Cook is encouraging people to join the live broadcast with a glass of their favourite tipple, and to state where they are in the world and what they are drinking, before he then guides the viewers in a giant, collective ‘cheers!’ “I’m going to try and say cheers in the language of every participant of the broadcast, but I may need to brush up on my Norwegian!” Gabe said.
Mr Cook hopes that this global first will bring a dose of much needed fun during these challenging times and will showcase the amazing array of global cider styles out there. He goes on to say, “There is nothing better than sharing a quality cider in the company of friends, so I hope this tasting can bring us all a little closer together and help us all be able to make some new friends, too.”

Crafty Nectar – Press Release – 26 March 2020
CIDER MARKETPLACE – SUPPORTING UK CIDER MAKERS
In the past few weeks it is evident that more than ever we all need to pull together, and do all we can to support each other in the cider industry.
Lots of small independent businesses will go out of business due to this viral outbreak, and small cider makers are most at risk. With pub closures and on-trade non-existent some will not survive weeks with little or zero cash flow. Further, many don’t have online shops or are connected to a distributor (such as Crafty Nectar ) who will be selling their stock. Equally as a small independent business ourselves (we have 1 full-time and 2 part time staff!) cashflow is a serious threat to our existence and it’s currently hard to buy new stock as a distributor.
Well, that’s enough doom and gloom. We have been working in the past few weeks to come up with a POSITIVE solution that can work for cider makers with a premises license.
INTRODUCING THE SMALL CIDER MARKETPLACE
Visit Now ( click here ) This new model will allow any cider maker to utilise our platform to host their own web store, taking on new cider sales and the thousands of visitors who come to our website each month.
