Aims and Objectives of the NACM
The work of the NACM is wide ranging, from setting and controlling standards of production and ethics within the industry, to ensuring that the industry’s viewpoint on key issues such as legislation and taxation are forcibly presented to Government.
The NACM:
- Shapes the commercial, technical, scientific, legislative and fiscal environments which impact on the producers of cider and perry in the UK
- Promotes the interests of cider and perry with consumers and fruit growers
- Encourages the positive development of the industry and the companies within it
- Fosters the responsible consumption of cider and perry
- Supports and protects the general interests of Cider Makers
In addition the NACM acts as the guardian to the unique tradition and heritage of the cider industry, yet in parallel it shapes a modern and relevant drinks category. Above all, the NACM is committed to a vibrant and diverse industry that develops consumer interest and creates opportunities for retailers.
Without the scale of other industries and bodies, the NACM has been very successful in punching above its weight on behalf of the cider industry. The NACM improves standards in the industry through revisions to its Codes of Practice and by working with government and others to improve the prospects for Cider Makers, retailers and consumers.
A key theme for the NACM is the environment, given that it is the rural landscape the industry relies upon for its prime raw material. The NACM promotes best practice in terms of orchard management and stewardship, and seeks to ensure that the growing of cider apples makes a positive rural impact and is a sustainable long term investment.
Consumers and all interested parties can be assured that members of the NACM are strictly obliged to adhere to its Code of Practice governing production methods and similarly marketing and advertising. Cider brands are regularly monitored and tested on behalf of the NACM by an independent agency to monitor compliance and instigate action if required. The NACM and members are also fully engaged in the education and promotion of social responsibility around alcohol.
