The National Association of Cider Makers
Introduction
Cider is possibly the oldest of all alcoholic drinks. It is certainly the oldest alcoholic drink produced in the UK. However, it remains relevant to modern consumers and has a bright future thanks to the innovation and skills of Cider Makers.
It is made in various countries around the world but is recognised today as a typically English (and latterly British) drink.
In 1066, the Normans brought their more advanced cider making methods to England and especially their cider apple varieties.
Unquestionably it is the English style of cider which is proving most popular worldwide and it was the Cider Makers of the UK who first identified the opportunity to develop cider into a contemporary drink.
This site offers details of the history and heritage of cider and also how cider is made. It has details of the scale and composition of industry and the Cider Makers, of all scales, that represent this most vibrant sector of the drinks market.
The National Association of Cider Makers
The voice of the UK’s cider makers.
Founded in 1920, the National Association of Cider Makers (NACM) is the governing body of the cider and perry industry in the UK. It represents both the larger producers and the many hundreds of smaller scale Cider Makers.
The NACM itself is a member of the Association of the Cider and Fruit Wine Industries of the European Union (AICV: www.aicv.org) and through this body is able to represent the interests of Cider Makers with the European Union.
Responsible drinking
Marketing any alcoholic drink places great responsibilities on those engaged in it and, since 1990, the NACM has had in operation its own Code of Practice for responsible marketing - the first produced by anyone in the drinks industry.
This initiative has been built upon in recent years with the launch of the Portman Group Code http://www.portmangroup.org.uk.
The NACM is a signatory to this Code, for more about our Responsible Drinking, click here.
