‘Mother tree’ collection provides valuable resource for growers
March 01 2010
Any growers looking for cider apple or perry pear propagation wood will now be able to access the Bulmers ‘Mother Tree’ list of varieties via Growers Update.
‘The ‘Mother tree’ list is intended as a permanent library that makes it easy for people to see what we have available and whether it suits their needs, either for grafting or budding,’ said Chris Fairs Growers' Advisory
Manager at Bulmers Orcharding Department.
‘We can either propagate the trees for them or post them the relevant material to do the work themselves,’ he said.
- Mother trees are used solely as a source of this wood - planted in the
nursery and cut back hard each winter to produce a large quantity of
suitable young growth with no fruit bud/blossom.
The trees in the collection are currently: Taignton Squash, Red Pear, Parsonage, Old Home USA, Old Home LARS, Oldfield, Moorcroft, LA62, Judge Amphlett, Hendre Huffcap, Hellens Early, Greggs Pit, Green Horse, Gin, Gebmostle, Butt, Brandy.
