How to calculate the area of herbicide-strip for the application of weedkillers

March 01 2010

A useful calculation for growers when working out the area of herbicide strips when applying weedkillers is now available at Growers Update on-line.

This can be calculated in hectares or acres, as required.

E.g. Strip area (hectares) = Number of trees in orchard x tree distance within row (m) x desired strip width (m)
10,000 (number of metres in a hectare)

I.e. 3320 trees, planted at 2.5 metres apart with a required overall strip width of 1.5 metres will have a herbicide-strip area of:

3320 x 2.5 x 1.5   = 1.25 hectares

        10,000

Alternatively, Strip area (acres) = Number of trees in orchard x tree distance within row (ft) x desired strip width (ft)
43560(number of square feet in an acre)

I.e. 3320 trees, planted at 8 feet apart with a required overall strip width of 5ft will have a herbicide-strip area of:

3320 x 8 x 5   = 3.05 acres

                43560

The same calculation can be used for the area calculation when applying fertilisers in a band, by substituting the desired overall band width for the desired herbicide strip dimensions in the equations, above.
