Orchard Pig’s Apple Blossom Day
April 06 2011
On Bank Holiday Sunday 1 May 2011 West Bradley Orchards, near Glastonbury, will open its gates again at the height of the apple blossom season.
For a fourth consecutive year Orchard Pig, makers of speciality apple juices and ciders, will welcome visitors for a day of exploration and fun at the 50 acres that make up West Bradley Orchards, owned by Edward and Sally Clifton-Brown.
With a hog roast, cider and juice bar, games and tractor and trailer rides there will be plenty of excitement for the whole family, and an opportunity to picnic under the trees with a glass of Orchard Pig.
Families will be able to enjoy a welly throwing contest (wellies provided) and a grand Tug O’War.
Local ice cream maker Lovington’s will be introducing its Orchard Pig Cider Sorbet and its Apple & Ginger ice cream; orchards guru Bob Chaplin from Gaymers’ Cider will be answering questions on all things orchard-related; bee experts will be explaining why we should all be concerned about our bees and the ladies of West Bradley Church will be offering plants and a cake stall.
Everyone loves to see the Orchard Pigs themselves and they will be on hand to greet visitors with their usual grace.
“Apple Blossom Day is a unique event in the Somerset Calendar. We look forward each year to sharing the beauty of the orchards in full blossom with our friends and neighbours” said Orchard Pig’s Managing Director Andrew Quinlan.
“It’s been a great year for us, and we were particularly proud of winning the award for Somerset New Business of the Year in only our third year of operation.”
“On Bank Holiday Sunday we will be especially delighted to raise a glass to toast Prince William and Kate Middleton.”
Visitors from previous years may notice a few changes at West Bradley Orchards; this year over 8,500 trees have been planted, to accompany the 9,000 that were planted in the last few years.
Said Operations Director, Neil Macdonald
“We are planting apple trees as fast as we can, and not only for ourselves - we have just finished planting 1,800 trees for other orchard owners locally.”
“The cider market is still doing very well and the apple juice market goes from strength to strength.”
“So every apple on this farm is spoken for before the tree is even planted!”
Neil will be available to answer visitors’ queries about orchard matters on Apple Blossom Day.
