One of the earliest written references to Cider can be found in the Wycliffe ‘Cider’ Bible, printed in the early 15th Century. The Bible gets its name from the translation of the verse ‘For he (John the Baptist) shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink...’. The Cider Bible uses the word ‘cider’ (sidir) for strong drink and it can be viewed today in Hereford Cathedral’s Chained Library.

Mitchell F&D Limited Wins Again!

June 21 2011

After his recent success at the long-established Hereford International Cider and Perry Competition in May, Peter Mitchell has also picked-up a number of other awards – including “Best in Show” - at the prestigious Three Counties International Cider & Perry competition at the Three Counties Show this month. Other prizes awarded were: Best in Worcestershire, a First Prize for his in-bottle fermented perry and a second prize for a single variety perry, in the “Medium & Sweet Perry” category.

Previously at the Hereford competition, Peter was awarded “Overall Champion”, won a first prize for his perry and also third prizes for his medium cider and for product packaging & presentation.

Peter started making cider in 1982 and since then ran the award winning Hindlip Cider at Worcester College of Agriculture until it was closed about 10 years ago. During the time at the college, he established and, for many years, ran the internationally recognised cider making courses.

Subsequently, and based on his highly regarded reputation across the world, Peter established his own training and advisory company for cider & perry production and continues to operate and expand the services on offer through the “Cider & Perry Academy” (http://www.cider-academy.co.uk).

Although a proud resident of Pershore, the current base for the cider & perry making courses is at The Orchard Centre at Hartpury in Gloucestershire. It is here that Peter has his own demonstration commercial production facility, which produces a range of value-added orchard fruit products marketed under the “Out of The Orchard” brand (http://www.outoftheorchard.co.uk). The current product range includes cider, perry, juices and speciality vinegars.

As Peter is often heard to say: “In my line of training and supporting others in their cider & perry making endeavours, it is so important that I practice what I preach and preach what I practice! As I learnt many years ago whilst working at Hindlip, unless I can actually do something well then I have no right to teach others how to do so”. Certainly these recent accolades are a testament to this.
