Drinkaware Share Ideas with Cider Industry

September 10 2009

Leaders of the cider industry invited alcohol charity Drinkaware to present its view on the role it plays in informing consumers and others on the responsible enjoyment of alcohol.

Chris Sorek, chief executive of Drinkaware spoke at the AGM of the National Association of Cider Makers (NACM) - the first invitation to the independent charity by any drinks trade body.

Mr Sorek said: 'I was delighted to have the chance to talk with the NACM and for the opportunity to engage with the people there and the interests and businesses they represent.

'Drinkaware is an independent charity providing information and facts to consumers, so it is important that we understand the issues and challenges others in the alcohol sector face and that they understand what our role is and what our plans are for the future.

'I was pleased to be able to share with the NACM some of our current work and future plans for tackling alcohol misuse. We want to ensure consumers have the information they need to make the decisions that are right for them.'

Chris Sorek was hosted jointly by Fenella Tyler and Henry Chevallier. At the AGM Henry was elected to the role of Chair of the NACM taking over from Fenella after her two-year period of office.

Henry Chevallier said: 'First I would place on record my gratitude to Fenella for her work as Chair of the NACM. In a period of unparalleled scrutiny she has guided the industry diligently and skilfully – I hope to preserve and develop the position we now hold.

'Like the drinks industry as a whole we face a number of challenges and the issue of social responsibility is key amongst them, so to have Chris Sorek of Drinkaware join us was highly relevant and really informative.

'Drinkaware is clearly effective in how it delivers information and education to consumers and in the period since Chris joined the organisation it has raised its game still further.

'The NACM is very keen to engage with the various agencies and organisations that contribute to the industry and the debate on the role of alcohol in society and I hope and expect we will work even closer with Drinkaware in the future.'
