Hogan’s launch a classic English Perry

July 28 2010

Cider-maker Allen Hogan of Hogan’s Cider began his mission to bring an appreciation of a distinctive and much neglected Midlands drink to a wider audience  with the launch of his Vintage Perry 2009 at the CLA Game Fair held at Ragley Hall, near Alcester, Warwickshire.

The artisan producer took advantage of one the world’s greatest countryside event on his doorstep to create awareness of his authentic perry created from fruit sourced from long-established orchards in the Three Counties heartland of perry making.

Produced in Castlemorton, Worcestershire, Hogan’s Perry is created from the fresh pressed juice of genuine perry pear varieties such as Blakeney Red and Malvern Hills. Fermented slowly and traditionally during cold winter months, a leisurely period of maturation takes place in Spring prior to blending for bottle.

Hogan’s Vintage Perry 2009 has an abv of 5.4% and is bright, lightly carbonated and pale gold in colour.  It has a delicate and refreshing taste and subtle yet wide ranging aroma of grassy, citrus and herbaceous notes.  On the palate, the acidity and tannin is balanced by sweetness from naturally occurring sugars.

Allen launched Hogans' cider in 2005 when he turned his twenty year hobby into a full-time business. He said:'Perry is a wonderful drink with a unique heritage that belongs to the Midlands region although so uncommon, most people probably don’t know of its existence.  I hope to do my bit to remedy this by creating a bona fide drink that is not only delicious and appealing but crafted in a traditional way.

'I am delighted with our 2009 vintage and hope that creating a sustainable demand for the perry fruit will encourage growers to maintain their orchards and invest in new ones.  It is vital future generations continue to savour this quintessentially English drink that was once famed throughout the country.'
